Please contact Michael Soper if your organization offers grants or grant information to affordable multifamily developments in Washington and would like to be included on this list.

  • Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation
     
  • Built Green Grant  The King County/Seattle Built Green® incentive provides funding for single-family, townhome, and multi-family residential and community development projects to help offset the cost of certifying and designing innovative green projects throughout Seattle and King County. Eligible projects may receive up to $20,000. Applications are due in May.
     
  • Catalog of Domestic Fed Assistance – Housing
     
  • CFED I'm Home - Innovations in Manufactured Homes  Requests for proposals or concept papers are usually due in March with funding decisions announced in September. There may be multiple funding rounds.
     
  • Database of State Incentives for Renewable Energy DSIRE is a comprehensive source of information on state, local, utility, and federal incentives that promote renewable energy and energy efficiency.
     
  • Department of Archeology and Historic Preservation Historic Sites Grant Listings
     
  • Efficient Windows Collaborative includes a summary of utilities that offer incentives and rebates for energy efficient windows.
     
  • EPA Brownfields Cleanup and Redevelopment Pilots & Grants
     
  • EPA Smart Growth Grants/Awards Applications are usually due in April. Winners are usually announced in November.
     
  • Fannie Mae Foundation Awards and Grants
     
  • Federal Home Loan Bank of Seattle Affordable Housing Program and Related Programs   Funded with 10 percent of the Seattle Bank's annual net income, the Affordable Housing Program (AHP) offers grants and subsidized advances to member financial institutions and their housing sponsors to stimulate affordable rental and homeownership opportunities for low- and moderate-income households. Funding round usually begins on or around June 1st. Applications are usually due on August 1st.
     
  • First Nations Development Institute Grants, Training & Technical Assistance manages six funds.

  • The Home Depot Foundation grants for Affordable Housing Built Responsibly grants. There are three application rounds each year with deadlines in November, March and July.

  • National Fish and Wildlife Foundation Grants provide funding on a competitive basis to projects that sustain, restore, and enhance our Nation's fish, wildlife, and plants and their habitats.

  • US Department of Energy Financial Opportunities   State Programs
     
  • Save Americas Treasures  Save America’s Treasures grants are available for preservation and conservation work on nationally significant historic properties and collections. Grants are awarded through a competitive process and require a dollar-for-dollar, non-Federal match (or cost-share). The minimum grant request for historic collections projects is $25,000 Federal share; the minimum grant request for historic property projects is $125,000 Federal share. The maximum grant request for all projects is $700,000 Federal share. The application deadline is usually in May.

  • Simply Insulate
     
  • Sound Families is a program to develop new housing with support services for homeless families, or families in danger of becoming homeless in King, Pierce and Snohomish counties. Sound Families has completed its final funding round and will no longer accept applications.
     
  • Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMSA) Grants for many purposes including development of comprehensive drug/alcohol and mental health treatment systems for persons who are homeless.
     
  • U.S. Department of Energy Weatherization Assistance Program
     
  • US Department of Veteran's Affairs Homeless Providers Grant and Per Diem Program for Homeless Veterans (HCHV).  Programs fund community agencies providing services to homeless veterans.
     
  • Valarie Sivinski Washington Preserves Fund - Washington Trust for Historic Preservation Valerie Sivinski Washington Preserves Fund is an annual grant program that provides up to $2,000 to organizations involved in historic preservation around our state. The award application deadline is usually February 15th. 
     
  • WA Department of Commerce, Community Services Division
     
  • Washington Families Fund (WFF) is a public-private partnership to expand service-enriched affordable housing for homeless families in Washington State. Request for Proposals (RFP) are released in July with proposals due in September. Awards were announced at a public ceremony in January.
     
  • Washington State Department of Fish and Wildlife Landowner Incentive Program Benefiting Species at Risk on Private Lands
     
  •  Washington State Historical Society Heritage Resource Center Heritage Capitol Projects Fund The purpose of HCPF is to “support capital needs and facilities of heritage organizations, tribal governments, public development authorities, and local government agencies that interpret and preserve Washington’s history and heritage”.  Applications for a biennium are usually due in May.
     
  • WA State Farmworker Housing Trust Offers Community Capacity Fund grants investing in: Seasonal Occupancy Housing; Year-round Community-based Rental Housing; Homeownership Programs; and Community Partnerships. Applicants are asked to complete a notice of interest. Grants have been issued in the summer.
     
  • The WHO Foundation: Women Helping Others ® - Offers support for grass-roots nonprofit charities serving the overlooked needs of women and children. Grants are provided to organizations serving women and/or children in the United States and Puerto Rico. Specific projects and programs addressing health and social service needs are the priority. Applications for education/literacy grants are usually due in March. Applications for General Grants are usually due in September.

  • Affordable Housing Tax Credit Coalition  The Charles L Edison Tax Credit Excellence Awards provide each winner with a $5,000 grant to bring additional services, facilities, or amenities to the development for the benefit of its residents. Nominations usually close in early April with winners announced in May.
     
  • American Institute of Architect (AIA) National Honor Awards

  • Enterprise Community Awards & Fellowships: MetLife Foundation Award (Nominations are due in May), Jim & Patty Rouse Award (Nominations are due in February?) & Excellence in Urban Journalism Award (Nominations are due in June)
     
  • EPA National Award for Smart Growth Achievement recognize outstanding achievement in smart growth by tribal, state, local, or regional governments in four categories: Overall Excellence, Policies and Regulations, Built Projects, and Equitable Development. Nominations are usually due in the spring.
     
  • Executive Alliance's Evergreen Award recognizes nonprofit organizations for their contributions to our communities and well-being and is presented at the Washington State Nonprofit Conference. Applications are usually due in March.
  • Governor's Smart Communities Awards (nominations through Department of Commerce) 
     
  • Home Depot Foundation Awards of Excellence including Awards of Excellence for Community Trees & Affordable Housing Built Responsibly
     
  • Housing Assistance Council National Rural Housing Conference Awards including: The Clay Cochran Award for Distinguished Service in Housing for the Rural Poor; The Skip Jason Community Service Award acknowledges individual efforts to improve the housing conditions of the rural poor in their communities; and The Henry B. Gonzalez Award for recognizing elected officials who have contributed to the improvement of housing conditions for low-income rural Americans. Nominations are usually accepted until mid September and awards are given out at the Conference (usually held in December.)
     
  • HUD Secretary's Awards  Awards include: HUD Secretary's Award for Excellence In Historic Preservation, nominations are usually due in March; HUD Secretary's Best in American Living Awards, nominations are usually due in July;  HUD Secretary's Opportunity and Empowerment Award, nominations are usually due in September and HUD Secretary's Housing and Community Design Awards,  nominations are usually due in December.
     
  • IAHSA Excellence in Ageing Services Awards will be considered from the proposals submitted during the July International Conference.
     
  • The I. Donald Terner Prize  The Terner Prize recognizes successful and innovative affordable housing projects and their leadership teams and usually due in August on even years. There is a $25,000 first prize and five $5,000 team stipends.
  • The John M. Clancy Award for Socially Responsible Housing  Nominations are usually due in April.
     
  • MetLife Foundation and LISC Community-Police Partnership Awards with neighborhood revitalization and special strategy awards from $15,000 to $25,000. Applications are usually due in February.
     
  • National Low Income Housing Coalition Cushing Niles Dolbeare Media Awards recognize print journalists who do an exemplary job of illuminating the affordable housing crisis in the United States. Applications are due in February.
     
  • National Trust for Historic Preservation National Preservation Awards  Awards include: Louise du Pont Crowninshield Award; Trustees’ Award for Organizational Excellence; John H. Chafee Trustees’ Award for Outstanding Achievement in Public Policy; Trustees Emeritus Award for Excellence in the Stewardship of Historic Sites; National Trust/HUD Secretary’s Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation; National Trust/ACHP Award for Federal Partnerships in Historic Preservation; and National Preservation Honor Awards. Nominations are usually due in March.
     
  • Partnership to End Homelessness Maxwell Awards of Excellence and other funding opportunities.
     
  • The Purpose Prize   Each year, since 2006, Civic Ventures has awarded The Purpose Prize: five $100,000 investments and ten $10,000 investments in exceptional individuals who are defying expectations by channeling their creativity and talent to address critical social problems at the local, regional, or national level. Nominations usually open in November and close by March 1, with the winners announced in December.
     
  • Urban Land Institute Foundation JC Nichols Prize for Visionaries in Urban Development - The annual $100,000 prize recognizes an individual whose own work, or work on behalf of an institution, has made a distinguished contribution to community building and who is committed to a built environment of the highest quality, anywhere in the world. Nominations are usually accepted until May 1.
     
  • US Department of Commerce Economic Development Administration (EDA) Excellence in Economic Development Awards with a category for Excellence in Historic Preservation-led Strategies. Entries are usually due in April, Award is presented in May.
     
  • World Habitat Awards  Two awards are given annually to projects from the global North as well as the South that provide practical and innovative solutions to current housing needs and problems. An award of £10,000 is presented to each of the two winners at the annual United Nations global celebration of World Habitat Day in October. Applications are due in May.
     
  • WSHFC Friend of Housing Awards  A Friend of Housing Awards nominee must have been instrumental in creating or supporting affordable housing, implementing housing-related programs, educational efforts, or helping others solve housing problems. Individuals or organizations doing exceptional work in the affordable housing arena will receive their awards in September at a reception a special Housing Washington Conference reception. Applications due July. 
     
  • WSHFC Margaret M. Sevy Award is a lifetime achievement award presented in September at a special Housing Washington Conference reception. Applications are due in July.

  • WA State Department of Revenue The state offers property tax exemptions for specific types of properties.  For more information go to Property Tax - Exemption Forms. One of the most informative forms is the Application for Property Tax and Leasehold Exemption Form 63 0001e (DOC). Pay close attention to the instructions and read the RCW referenced by each exemption. Contact the Department of Revenue if you have questions.
