Housing Washington 2009: The Theme was Change

Keynote Speakers Shared Rich Personal Histories in Looking Forward to New Policy Directions
By special conference correspondent, Eloise Sheldon, of XMedia Communications
It’s people who make a cause—and a conference. We’re fortunate that our region is home to so many committed and capable people who are passionate about building strong communities and providing housing opportunities that are affordable to people of all incomes and all walks of life.

Each year, Housing Washington creates a big tent for the people who work to help affordable housing grow and prosper. They come to be inspired by keynote speakers who are impacting progressive housing policies on a national level; to learn about new trends in affordable housing and hear how others are solving challenges in their communities; to collaborate and build relationships. It was gratifying to us that, despite a tough economic year, more than 600 people came to Spokane to contribute their energies and ideas to Housing Washington 2009.
The overarching theme for 2009 was Change. This was a fitting tribute to the new approaches to solving national and local challenges that are gaining momentum across the country. Keynote speakers Donna Brazile, Melissa Harris-Lacewell, Michelle Kauffman, and Ron Sims each brought a unique perspective on the changes they see taking shape on the national stage: big-picture shifts in priorities, philosophies, and policies.
